Ms. Betty Jane Scates, 89, of Bruceton, Tennessee, passed away at Jackson Madison Co General Hospital on Friday, May 29, 2026.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00PM Sunday, May 31, 2026, in the Chapel of Dilday-Carter Funeral Home with Brother James Keen and Brother Randy Thompson officiating. Interment will follow in New Prospect Cemetery in Hollow Rock.
The family will receive friends at Dilday-Carter Funeral Home on Saturday from 4:30PM until 8:00PM and on Sunday from 10:00AM until 2:00PM.
Honoring her as Pallbearers will be Connor Hollingsworth, Hayden Lewis, Malik Mathes, Stan Scates, Austin Starr, and Michael Wadley.
Ms. Scates was born on December 25, 1936, in Huntingdon TN to the late William Albert and Edna Bennett Smith. After she graduated high school, she married her best friend and high school sweetheart Ray Scates on November 26, 1955.
She was a member of Huntingdon Missionary Baptist Church where she was active in helping in many ways for as long as she was able. She retired from Publix Shirt Factory (Thomas Bradford) where she worked for 40+ years as a sewing machine operator. She was also co-owner of Scates Grocery & Market in Hollow Rock where she worked part-time until it was sold in 1975.
Jane loved the Lord, her many friends at HMBC, and her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and even a great-great-grandmother.
Jane is survived by one daughter Debbie Devault, and one son Mike (Lori) Scates, one brother Billy (Patsy) Smith. She also leaves three grandchildren, Melissa Cox, Monica Hollingsworth, and Jonathan (Kristin) Devault, six great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn (Austin) Starr, Kristen Cox, Kylie Hollingsworth, Connor (Josalyn) Hollingsworth, Kasper Malchow and Kaylee Devault, three great-great-grandchildren Riley, William and Baylor and a very special niece Linda Cursey.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Ray Scates, who passed away September 25, 2024, three sisters Evonne Smith, Bobbie Jean Rich, and Wanda Workman, grandson William Devault, and grandson-in-law Shane Cox.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the family.
