Mr. Gooch was born January 31, 1945 to the late James Audrain Gooch and Vida Roark Gooch in Huntingdon, Tennessee. In addition, he is preceded in death by his sister Patricia Wilson. He retired from work as a Director of Internal Audits for Memphis City Schools. Waldon loved to spend time with his family and huge number of friends. He loved to cook for and hang out with his buddies at the Peckerwood Club, and he loved to cook for his family-he relished every opportunity to cook up a big pot of shrimp, some hamburgers, or shepherd’s pie…or maybe those yeast rolls good enough make Sister Schubert jealous. He loved the river, and he loved passing on his knowledge of it. If you ever got to spend time on the water with him, you know that there weren’t many things he’d rather be doing-running down to see friends, going to see fireworks at Pebble Isle, heading to Rockport for a picnic…or just cruising around, whiling away the day. He loved to check out the osprey nests, see the great blue heron swoop across the lake, and watch the huge bunches of pelicans that would occasionally congregate in Cypress Creek and in North Lake. From his deck or even his couch, he loved to watch hummingbirds and woodpeckers, along with countless other types of birds. Since this was one of his very favorite hobbies, he had the books, he knew the shapes, colors, songs and time of year they could be seen. Those birds were another gift to Waldon and to all of us from the river. He had great pride for the area where he grew up and lived. Woven into all these things, though, was his family. He was a tremendous son, father, brother, cousin, and granddaddy. He loved everybody and he showed it in a ton of ways.
He is survived by his daughter, Amanda (Matthew) Noe of Memphis, Tennessee; grandson Hudson Noe; sisters, Karen (Paul) Simmons of Mount Juliet, Tennessee and Pamela (Sammy) Edwards of Yuma, Tennessee.
Honoring him as pallbearers will be Johnny Carter, Harold Allen, Chet Rogers, Trey Quirk, Clint Wilson, and Roger Teague. Honorary pallbearers will include Barry Mac Murphy and Bob Cannon.
